On February 10, 2026, Kerala's Labour Minister V Sivankutty inaugurated the 'Rakshakavacham' accident insurance scheme, designed to provide financial security to private sector workers in the state. Described as a significant labour welfare initiative, the scheme aims to protect workers and their families during crises. It will offer insurance coverage for accidental deaths, ensuring the family of a deceased worker receives ₹5 lakh, supplementing benefits from the Workmen’s Compensation Act. Implemented through the Comprehensive Health Insurance Agency of Kerala (CHIAK), it targets establishments covered under the Wage Security Scheme, already involving over 13 lakh workers. The government hopes to extend this cover to 25 lakh workers with a minimal annual contribution. The initiative addresses the economic vulnerability that accidents pose to families, with a dedicated budget of ₹30 lakh allocated for the 2025–26 fiscal year. Registration is facilitated through the CHIAK with cooperation from the Labour Department.
