In a recent press conference, Shinjiro Koizumi, Japan's Minister of Defense, stated that the recent Japanese House of Representatives election results affirmed the need for enhancing security-related strategies. The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) achieved a decisive victory, securing 316 seats, surpassing the required two-thirds majority, thus enabling them to push ahead with their pledge to update national security documents and strengthen the U.S.-Japan alliance. Koizumi stressed the necessity of advancing Japan's independent defense capabilities and confirmed that discussions will continue to ensure a sustainable fiscal strategy for the defense budget, aiming to align Japan's defense spending with a GDP target of 2%. He emphasized Japan's intention to work with the United States to identify necessary equipment purchases. Looking ahead, Koizumi expressed his commitment to expediting the process with a strong sense of urgency and mentioned the necessity of a public referendum for constitutional amendments at the earliest opportunity.
