Nigeria Ranks 36th Most Corrupt Country in Transparency International's 2025 Report

Politics

Nigeria has been ranked as the 36th most corrupt country globally, positioned 142nd out of 182 countries in the 2025 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) released by Transparency International. The CPI assesses perceived corruption in the public sector, using a score from 0 to 100, where 0 indicates high corruption levels, and 100 signifies a very clean nation. Nigeria maintained its score of 26 from the previous year, yet dropped two positions from 140th to 142nd, reflecting stagnation in its anti-corruption efforts. This places Nigeria below the global average score, which slightly decreased from 43 to 42, and behind 33 other African countries. The leading African nations in the ranking were Seychelles, Cabo Verde, Botswana, and Rwanda. Reacting to these findings, former Senator Shehu Sani criticized the perceived bias of Transparency International, suggesting that they overlook corruption in some Western countries, where illicit funds are reportedly stored.
